Academic Needs Emergency Fund

The Academic Needs Emergency Fund - supported by an anonymous donation - is intended to provide urgent financial support to a Black undergraduate or graduate student majoring in the disciplines of hearing and speech sciences, communication disorders, audiology, or speech-language pathology who are on the brink of being removed from their academic program due to a university expense. This fund is not a scholarship and is not intended to fully support a full semester tuition expense.

Students must demonstrate an exceptional financial need and that the student have exhausted all effort to pay the expense, NBASLH members and non-members are eligible to apply, and must meet the following criteria:

  • Undergraduate or graduate student enrolled full-time at a University in the United States majoring in hearing and speech sciences, communication disorders, audiology, or speech-language pathology and must be in the last semester of the program.
  • Identifies as Black or African American.
  • Scholarship application must include all of the following requirements:
    1. Current resume;
    2. Copy of unofficial transcript;
    3. Verification of good standing from counselor or academic advisor. Click here for Academic Verification Form
    4. 500-word statement of exceptional financial need to remain in school and the amount needed. Statement must include steps that you have already taken to resolve your financial circumstances.
    5. Supporting documentation of financial need (e.g., bill from institution or notification of program dismissal due to a university expense.)

Application and Decision:

  • Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis
  • Applications are reviewed and approved by the NBASLH Executive Committee on a case-by-case basis.
  • You may anticipate a response within 10 business days of submitting your application.
