Description:
Hearing loss (HL) affects approximately 15% of adults in the United States and the prevalence of increases with age. Hearing aids help to amplify speech to a more audible level and are commonly used as an approach to manage hearing loss. However, despite the prevalence of hearing loss in the population, many individuals that have hearing loss live their lives without using hearing aids intervention. Among the factors contributing to the gap between hearing loss prevalence and hearing use is the financial cost of traditional hearing aids. For example, the cost of one hearing aid can run average of approximately $2000 or more depending on the level of technology. All or a portion of cost can fall on the patient, as Medicare and most private insurances do not cover the cost of hearing aids. With the Over-the-Counter (OTC) Hearing Aid Act signed into law in 2017, discourse surrounding impact of OTC hearing aid products on the profession of audiology has increased. This panel will discuss the role OTC hearing aids can have in addressing accessibility issues in hearing healthcare, especially BIPOC communities where disparities continue to exist in access and utilization of healthcare.
